As Patrick indicated, things like my iPhone seem to connect only on a slow band. I have 300MB service from my ISP. When SmartConnect is enabled, Ookla download speeds on the iPhone 13 are about 30. When I disable SmartConnect, and connect directly to the 5G band, it jumps to close to the service level. I guess this isn’t really ready for prime time, or maybe not useful in a simple home environment. If I went and bought the Asus Zen router, I should be able to optimally use it at the speed rating at or near what my ISP is delivering.
I have been playing with smart connect on my Asus AX6000 router. With it enabled, my laptop only connects to the 2.4 band and speed test about 50Mbs. When I separate the bands and run my laptop on the 5Ghz my speed test is 380Mbs. I was under the impression it was running data across both bands in parallel, similar to cutting a train in half and running it on two tracks.
It looks like ASUS removed their Smart Connect guide. I can’t find it anymore. So I removed my link to the missing page. Thanks for highlighting this issue.

Unfortunately, Smart Connect isn’t very reliable. It is good that you turned it off.
