Privacy policy: the data we collect and how it’s used
We do our best to minimize the data we collect. Even so, the many web services that are necessary for us to function, like Google Analytics, Google AdSense, and Cloudflare, collect a lot of data. Here’s how and why:
Data collected for keeping our website and our readers safe
When you visit our website, its content is served using the Cloudflare CDN service for improved speed and security. Cloudflare logs visitors’ interactions to provide anonymous statistical reports, as well as detect security threats and malicious third parties. They may share information about our visitors only when they have a reasonable belief that those visitors pose a security threat. You can learn more here: Cloudflare Privacy Policy.
When you place a comment on Digital Citizen, we store the content of that content, the name you provide, your email, as well as the date and time when you posted it. This data is used to notify you when someone replies to your comment(s). This data is also used to block access to our site for people who post SPAM or malicious content that harms others. To better protect yourself, it is OK not to use your real name or a partial name when posting a comment. Once your comment is submitted, it becomes public, and all our readers can see it. If you want to modify a comment you made or delete it, contact us and request the change you wish. You can also unsubscribe yourself from the notifications you get for any replies to your comment.
We use the Google reCAPTCHA service to stop SPAM attacks through comments. This service uses the same terms and conditions as other Google services: Google Privacy Policy.
We also use the Wordfence Security Plugin to stay safe from the latest security exploits, detect malware threatening our website and its visitors, block malicious IP addresses in real time, and stop all kinds of attacks against our website. This service generally tracks non-personalized information such as your operating system, browser, IP address, and device type to help us remain protected. For details on their data collection practices, read the Wordfence Privacy Policy.
Data collected to earn a living
To monetize our work, we work with Google AdSense and other ad networks that partner with Google to display ads. The ad networks collect data like your IP address and the pages you visit for statistics, data analysis, and ad personalization. Here’s detailed information on how Google uses information from sites that use their services, including ours.
Data collected for communication
We use data to communicate with you, both on our website and through email:
Communication and emails
We offer an email newsletter that is sent daily or weekly, based on your choice. When you subscribe, you must provide an email address, first name, and last name. That data is stored by the MailerLite service, and it is used only to contact you and send messages about our content. It is not sold or shared with any third party. The data is also protected with security measures like two-step verification. You can unsubscribe from our newsletters at any time using the unsubscribe link at the end of each newsletter we send. You can read their privacy policy here: MailerLite Privacy Policy.
Do Not Track settings
Most web browsers have a Do Not Track or DNT feature that lets websites know you don’t want to be tracked. When you enable the DNT setting in your web browser, it sends a Do Not Track request with your browsing traffic to all the websites you visit and the third-party services they’re using, asking them not to collect data about you and your browsing habits.
Even though older versions of our website respected DNT settings, we couldn’t implement this feature when switching to Google Analytics v4 and other complex services. It was simply way too complicated for our limited resources. The end result is that our Digital Citizen website does not obey such settings when transmitted by your web browser.
Cookies
Our website uses cookies for various purposes, such as display advertising, embedding content from outside sources, or affiliate marketing. Our policies regarding cookies are available here: Cookies on Digital Citizen.
